Plan Your Visit to Rocheport, Missouri
The practical side of a visit: maps, restrooms and water, bikes, cell service, accessibility, river levels and weather, and a trip planner that points you to the places locals send their own visitors.
Maps
Two maps come up more than any other question we get: the trail, and the race.
- Katy Trail map: interactive, plans a ride leg by pace from the Rocheport trailhead in either direction.
- MR340 river race map: the live tracker in race week, and a replay of past races.
Restrooms, water, bikes and cell service
- Restrooms
- At the Rocheport trailhead, at the foot of First Street. They are accessible and open year-round.
- Water
- At the trailhead. Carry more than you think you need, plus a snack, especially in July and August.
- Bike rental
- Meriwether Cafe & Bike Shop, 700 First Street, by the trailhead. Call ahead on weekends.
- Bike repair
- The nearest full bike shop for repairs is in Columbia. Carry a tube, a patch kit and a pump.
- Cell service
- Spotty west of town along the bluffs. Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
- In the tunnel
- It is cool, about 55 degrees all year, and dim. Bring a light layer and a light.
- Town government
- City hall, the Board of Aldermen, county offices, public notices and meeting records.
- Ticks
- Peak season is roughly June to September. Stay in the middle of the trail and check yourself afterward.
Accessibility
The Katy Trail through Rocheport follows the old railroad grade, so it is flat, with a crushed-limestone surface that is firm when dry and soft for a day or two after heavy rain. The town itself has hills and some brick streets.
The spur trail from the Katy up to the A-Frame is steep in places. If a climb is a problem, drive to the winery on Highway BB instead. The restroom at the trailhead is accessible and open year-round. Many of the town's shops and inns are in old buildings, so call ahead if you need step-free entry. Missouri State Parks publishes accessibility information for the whole trail on its Katy Trail State Park page.
River levels and weather
The river gauge closest to Rocheport is the Missouri River at Boonville, U.S. Geological Survey station 06909000. Below 18 feet the river is normal. At 21 feet, the flood stage, low ground along the river starts to flood.
The Katy Trail runs along the river bottoms here, so high water matters for a ride. After heavy rain upstream the river can rise several feet in a day, so read the National Weather Service forecast crest, not just today's reading.
