The Daily Rundown

Monday, September 7

Monday morning, here's what's worth knowing around Rocheport, New Franklin, and the counties.

Around the Counties

Found a stray dog? Don’t rush it to the shelter. The Central Missouri Humane Society is pausing routine dog intake for two weeks, starting last Thursday, after confirming a case of canine parvovirus in the shelter. If you find a stray, they’re asking you to try reuniting it with its owner on the spot first — they’ll still scan for a microchip and can lend basic supplies to help you house a dog temporarily while an owner’s tracked down. Genuine emergencies are still handled case by case with Columbia/Boone County Animal Control. Parvo is nasty for dogs but not a risk to people.

A new shelter is already nearly full. Boone County’s new VAC Opportunity Campus has filled close to 150 beds a night in its first 53 days, and the Columbia Missourian reports almost everyone staying there is a Boone County resident, many working toward sobriety. Worth knowing if you or a neighbor ever need to point someone toward help closer to home than you might expect.

Happening Soon

Tonight: It’s Pig in the Park, Rocheport’s Labor Day potluck, 5–7 p.m. in town. Pork sliders are provided; bring a lawn chair and a dish (appetizer if your last name starts A–G, side for H–N, dessert for O–Z). Proceeds benefit the Rocheport Parks Department.

Friday: The Friends of Rocheport Mum Sale starts at 10 a.m.

Saturday: Second Saturday events fill downtown Rocheport starting at 10 a.m.

Roads & I-70

Three things to route around this month, all via MoDOT: the I-70/US 63 connector in Boone County closes completely over I-70 from 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, to 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, while crews set girders for a new flyover ramp. Route 124 resurfacing between US 63 and Route 240 in Howard County continues with one lane open through late September. And the ongoing I-70 widening project between Route 5 in Boonville and the Missouri River bridge — the Boonville-to-Rocheport third-lane project — keeps lane closures in play through December 2027, so budget extra time on that stretch.
