It’s going to be dangerously hot today. The National Weather Service has Boone County — along with Callaway, Audrain, Cole, Moniteau, Osage, Gasconade, Monroe, and Montgomery counties — under an Extreme Heat Warning through Saturday, with heat index values expected to hit 103 to 107 degrees this afternoon; the warning area could still expand. Mizzou’s home opener tonight at Faurot Field is set to kick off with temperatures in the low 90s and a heat index near 100 — hotter than that on the turf itself, according to ABC 17’s Stormtrack Weather Team. If you’re headed into Columbia today for any reason, treat it like the dangerous heat it is — water, shade, and breaks.
Columbia police and downtown bar owners held a closed-door meeting Wednesday on safety ahead of tonight’s kickoff, coming up on a year after the shooting during 2025’s Homecoming weekend that killed one person and injured two others, KBIA reports. Attendees didn’t share what was discussed, but Hexagon Alley owner Colleen Rieman told KBIA she wants to see a dedicated downtown police unit return. A handful of bar and liquor-store owners, including Tropical Liqueurs, were initially left off the invite list; Police Chief Jill Schlude added them after the fact.
If you or someone in your household gets SNAP benefits, new paperwork rules start Oct. 1. Missouri will require documentation — not just self-reporting — for shelter costs, dependent-care expenses, and bank accounts at application and recertification, ABC 17 reports. Some recipients say they haven’t heard about the change from the state yet. If that’s you, don’t wait for your recertification date to catch you off guard — head to your local Family Support Division office now with bills, your lease, and bank statements in hand.

Roads & I-70
MoDOT is asking football fans to build in extra travel time this weekend — Improve I-70 construction is ongoing on both the Boonville-to-Rocheport and Rocheport-to-Columbia stretches (plus four other segments statewide), and work-zone lanes are narrower than what drivers are used to. Leave early and watch your speed through the cones, MoDOT says. Locally as of this morning, the ramps connecting I-70 and MO-163 (Providence Road) are closed in both directions, along with sections of the outer road on either side — worth knowing if your route into Columbia runs through there today.
