Your five-minute catch-up for Friday, August 7. Here’s what matters on our stretch of the river today.
Around the Counties
Flood warning still active for Petite Saline Creek near Boonville. A National Weather Service flood warning for the Blackwater River near Blue Lick and Petite Saline Creek near Boonville — right in Cooper County — stays in effect until 2:55 a.m. Saturday, with the creek forecast to crest around 22.2 feet and water expected to reach the U Highway bridge, per ABC 17’s alert desk. NWS’s advice stands: turn around, don’t drown.
Thursday’s storms swamped Boone County roads. Columbia Fire and Boone County Fire Protection crews fielded 60 storm-related 911 calls and made eight water rescues Thursday — no injuries reported, though homes near Mesa Drive had to be evacuated and Highway 40 at I-70 West flooded out, ABC 17 reports. “There was a huge surge of 911 calls,” Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said.
Pilot Grove woman seriously hurt in Cooper County hydroplane crash. A 19-year-old Pilot Grove woman was seriously injured Thursday around 11:50 a.m. when her car hydroplaned through standing water on Route JJ near Missouri 135, left the road, and overturned, KOMU 8 reports. She was belted in and was taken to Bothwell Regional Health Center. With more standing water around, give flooded shoulders a wide berth.
Outdoors & River
The Missouri River gauge at Boonville read 10.1 feet this morning and rising, with flow near 60,000 cubic feet per second — still well under flood stage, but it’s the same storm system moving through, so keep an eye on it before you put in at the ramp this weekend.
Happening Soon
Live piano tonight, comedy tomorrow at the Winery. The Rocheport Winery at Mount Nebo Inn has Audra Sergal on piano tonight at 7 p.m., followed Saturday by a comedy show headlined by Liam Nelson (6 p.m. and 8 p.m. shows).
Roads & I-70
The Boonville-to-Rocheport I-70 widening project keeps its nighttime lane closures running through the corridor most nights — MoDOT says the $104 million, 13-mile third-lane build stays on track for late 2027. Separately, as of this morning MoDOT’s live closures list showed several Boone County routes still down, including stretches of MO-124, MO-163 near Providence Road, and outer roads along I-70. Check before you head out.
