The Katy Trail through Rocheport is in solid shape heading into summer, but there are a few things worth knowing before you set out. The surface between the tunnel and the Huntsdale spur received fresh limestone screenings in April, and it’s well-packed and fast. The stretch west toward McBaine tends to hold moisture longer after rain — give it a day or two after a heavy storm before riding it loaded. If you’re doing an out-and-back from town, the mile 169–172 segment is consistently the smoothest.
Mile markers in this section run from approximately 168 near the trailhead to 179 at the Boonville bridge approach. The tunnel at mile 169.9 is lit, but it’s long and the lighting is uneven — a headlight is recommended even during daytime. The rock wall on the river side just past the tunnel is a good spot to stop and watch for herons and eagles, particularly in early morning.
Seasonally, the trail gets heavily used on weekends from May through October. Expect foot traffic from tourists and families, especially near the trailhead parking area. Midweek mornings offer the best conditions for uninterrupted riding. Water is available at the trailhead and at the Rocheport depot. The nearest bike shop is in Columbia, so carry a tube and a pump.
