There is a moment in mid-October when you round the bend on the Katy Trail just east of Rocheport and the whole valley opens up: limestone bluffs rising 75 feet above you, draped in sugar maple gold and hickory bronze, the Missouri River catching the light below, and nothing between you and all of it but a few miles of packed gravel and cool autumn air. That moment is why fall is the best time to come.
The Rocheport-to-McBaine stretch — widely called the most iconic and scenic section of the entire Katy Trail — runs nine miles between the bluffs and the river, tucked along the northern bank with a canopy of color overhead from September through late October. Start at the Rocheport trailhead and ride west to the Rocheport Tunnel near mile marker 178.7: the only tunnel on the 240-mile trail, hand-cut from limestone in 1892, 243 feet long, and cool and dark even on the warmest fall afternoon. Bike rentals and a proper breakfast are waiting at Meriwether Cafe and Bike Shop right at the trailhead — scratch cooking, local ingredients, no reason to skip it.
If you want to see the river valley from above instead of beside it, climb the steep path to the overlook on the bluff above the Rocheport Tunnel — a grand vantage over the wooded bottoms, bluffs, and the Missouri River corridor that is genuinely hard to leave. For wetland views and birdwatching, the nearby Diana Bend Conservation Area along the river is worth a stop too.
The fall season opens with a celebration. Les Bourgeois Vineyards hosts its annual Crush Festival in mid-September at the A-Frame Winegarden on the blufftop — grape stomp, harvest energy, and views that explain why people make the drive from across the state. The A-Frame stays open through October, which means warm evenings with a glass of Missouri wine and the last of the season’s color fading out over the river. There are worse ways to end a Saturday.
Missouri falls peak around mid-October, but the season earns its keep from September through November. The trail gets quieter, the air gets crisp, and Rocheport — all 200-plus residents of it — feels exactly like the kind of place you want to find before everyone else does. Plan your visit here.
