Boone County’s 911 center swapped phone providers this week, moving off Brightspeed and onto AT&T’s newer emergency-services network. The change follows a September 16 outage that knocked out Brightspeed’s system across mid-Missouri for hours and disrupted 911 calls; the new setup gives dispatchers more than one path to route a call if a line goes down. Columbia’s long-running transmission-line fight has its next public meeting. The city’s Utilities Department will hold open houses on October 6 (1:30–3:30 p.m. and 5:30–7:30 p.m., Forum Christian Church, 3900 Forum Blvd.) on the proposed 161-kilovolt line along Vawter School Road. The Missouri Department of Conservation is asking hunters and landowners to report sick or dead deer this month. A midge-borne illness called hemorrhagic disease is moving through the herd and “often kills a deer within a few days,” MDC’s Brigidi Niemeyer said — it shows up most years about now, but the agency wants a read on how bad this fall’s outbreak is. Roads & I-70
Two stretches of overnight work to route around. Crews shut Business Loop 70 under I-70 in Columbia Thursday night to pull old bridge signage — part of the $441 million project adding a third lane each way on I-70 between the Missouri River bridge at Rocheport and Route 63. Then Friday at 7 p.m. through Saturday at 6 a.m., MoDOT narrows westbound I-70 to one lane and closes both connector ramps at the Highway 63 interchange for girder work on a new 63-to-westbound-70 flyover ramp; heading south on 63, use Range Line St. (Exit 127) — heading north, use Stadium Blvd. (Exit 124) — to get around it.
