On Sunday, Central Missouri Humane Society had a problem most shelters would love to have: more volunteers than dogs. Thirty-seven people signed up for the shelter’s “Doggy Day Out” event to look after just 16 dogs for the afternoon — and every single one of them got taken home.
Starting at 9 a.m., volunteers picked up shelter dogs and kept them through the afternoon, giving the animals a few hours out of their kennels and giving staff a rare, dog-free window to deep-clean the facility from top to bottom — no small task in a building that’s now 50 years old and shows it. Michelle Casey, the shelter’s associate director and campaign manager, said the turnout caught them off guard: “We’ve had an overwhelming turnout,” she said.
The day did double duty. Beyond the clean kennels, staff collected notes from volunteers on how each dog behaved outside the shelter — in a living room, on a walk, around a house — giving the animal-care team a fuller picture than shelter observation alone can offer, and useful information for matching dogs with the right adoptive homes down the road.
It’s the kind of afternoon that doesn’t make headlines on its own: some dogs got a day out, some kennels got scrubbed, a few dozen people gave up a Sunday. Put together, it’s a shelter that’s clearly got a community behind it.
