Registered sex offender arrested after two nights in Rolling Hills Park. Boonville police found Andrew Capps, 26, at the park Monday night after it had closed. When officers moved to detain him, he ran — and slipped on wet grass, letting them catch up. Capps is on the federal sex offender registry after a 2021 guilty plea for distributing child sexual abuse material, and being at a public park violated the terms of his supervised release; he told police he’d been living in the park for two days. He’s held at the Cooper County Jail without bond, facing charges of being a sex offender at a park and resisting arrest. According to ABC 17 News and Boonville Daily News.
South Columbia loses power this morning while crews clear a fallen tree. About 70 City of Columbia Electric customers near Lynwood Drive, Red Oak Lane, and Crawford Street are without power from 8:30 a.m. to noon today — a tree fell onto another tree and snagged an overhead line, so crews need it de-energized to work safely. According to ABC 17 News.
The heat isn’t done with us — now it’s stretched to Friday. The National Weather Service’s Extreme Heat Warning for Cooper, Howard, and the rest of mid-Missouri, which we told you about Monday, now runs through 8 p.m. Friday with heat index values up to 110. Perseid meteors peak tonight and Thursday. With no moon to wash out the sky, you could see 30 to 50 meteors an hour between midnight and dawn — no telescope needed, just a dark spot away from town lights and some patience. It’ll still be in the 80s after dark, so bring water. According to ABC 17 News.
A quieter pool day for Boonville families. Last week the Boonville Lions Park Aquatic Center held its second annual Low Sensory Swim Party, opening the pool to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in a calmer, less crowded setting. According to Boonville Daily News.

Ashland swaps interim city administrators. Mayor Dorise Slinker has replaced interim administrator Steve Rasmussen — who was juggling the role with heavy travel and building a new home — with Marty Corcoran, a 36-year former city manager in Maplewood. The city’s application window for a permanent administrator stays open through September 4. According to Columbia Missourian.

The Missouri River at Boonville reads 7.99 feet and falling this morning, well under flood stage — good, calm water if you’re getting out ahead of the afternoon heat.
Roads & I-70
MoDOT’s Boonville-to-Rocheport third-lane project keeps running through late 2027, so expect nightly lane closures in that 13-mile work zone as crews widen the highway and the Union Pacific bridge. According to MoDOT.
Closer to Columbia, several ramps and outer roads remain closed around the MO-163/I-70 interchange and St. Charles Road, including the eastbound I-70-to-MO-163 ramp — check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map before you head that way.
