Still Hot This Afternoon
The heat advisory isn’t done with us yet. The National Weather Service has Boone County under a Heat Advisory until 7 p.m. tonight, with heat index values climbing as high as 102 degrees. If you’re out working the garden or walking the trail, push it to the morning or evening, and check in on anyone who doesn’t have reliable air conditioning.
Around the Counties
Most Columbia voters will pick a new congressional district for the first time on Aug. 4. The state’s redrawn map moved almost all of Columbia out of the old 4th District and into the 3rd, which now runs from central Missouri to the St. Louis suburbs. Live north of the city, and you’ve landed in the new 5th District instead, stretching toward Kansas City. If it’s been a while since you checked your sample ballot, now’s the time — KBIA has the breakdown.
Boone County Animal Control has paused most stray dog intake. The Central Missouri Humane Society is holding 20 of the 25 kennels it contracts for animal-control cases, and a mix of surrendered strays, cruelty cases, and court-ordered quarantines has the shelter full. If you find a stray, KBIA reports the ask is to post it to the Columbia Lost & Found Pets Facebook group rather than bring it in.
Flying out of Columbia Regional soon? Plan for a longer walk. The airport closes its north parking lot Aug. 3 to start a $3.2 million paving project adding roughly 250 spaces, running into December. Travelers returning after Aug. 1 should park south and ride the shuttle in — details via KBIA.

Outdoors & River
The river’s turned back around. After sliding to 7.03 feet over the weekend, the Missouri River gauge at Boonville read 7.18 feet this morning and is rising — still well under flood stage, but a reversal from the falling water we wrote about Sunday.
Roads & I-70
The westbound I-70 on-ramp to Providence Road (MO-163) is closed for several months for bridge-girder work, and the westbound off-ramp is already down. Crews are also closing a lane in each direction overnight (7 p.m.–6 a.m.) through Wednesday. ABC 17 reports it’s one of seven bridges being rebuilt as part of the larger Improve I-70 project. Today’s MoDOT closure data also shows outer-road segments and a stretch of County Road St. Charles Road closed nearby — Rangeline Street is the nearest detour if you’re headed that way.
