If your drive home takes you through Boonville, or out along the Highway 240/Route 40 junction just outside Rocheport, you’ve got a shortcut to dinner that doesn’t involve a grocery store line. Two open-air produce stands in our stretch of the river are set up to make “grabbing something fresh” as easy as a quick pull-off — no basket, no checkout, no fuss. Stop, shop, and go, and the money stays with the growers who put it there.
Here’s what we know about each, and what we’re still nailing down.
The Boonville stand
There’s a daily open-air produce stand in Boonville at 600 Main that regulars already know how to find — the kind of spot where you swing by on your way to or from an errand and come home with something better than what you left with. It’s a nice complement to (and separate from) the well-known Boonville Farmers Market, which only runs Saturday mornings — this is the six day a week option for whenever the mood (or the empty produce drawer) strikes.
The 240/40 junction stand
Just outside Rocheport, where Route 240 meets Highway 40, there’s a second stand worth building into your regular loop — handy if you’re headed into Columbia, out to the winery, or just running back and forth on the highway. It’s the kind of stop you can build into a trip you’re already making. It runs Monday through Saturday from 10am-5pm approximately, inclement weather can close them down early.
Why it’s worth the thirty-second detour
A few things make stands like these worth building into your routine:
- It’s fast. No cart, no lines — pull off, pick what looks good, pay, go.
- It’s fresher. Produce that traveled a few miles instead of a few states tends to taste like it.
- It keeps dollars close to home. Every purchase goes straight to a local grower, not a distribution warehouse three states away.
- Bring cash and a bag. Small stands like these often aren’t set up for cards, and a reusable bag or box in the trunk makes the stop even faster.
What’s actually sitting on the table changes week to week with the harvest, so we’re not going to guess at it here — better to see it fresh when you pull up than read a promise we can’t back up. You will see seasonal produce along with staples like onions, potatoes, squash, zucchini, and more.
Consider this your heads-up to keep an eye out next time you’re driving through Boonville or past Rocheport near that 240/40 junction. Slow down so you do pass it up.
