Fayette Water and Electric Meter Testing and Billing Adjustments ordinance (§ 700.050)

Chapter 700: General Provisions

In short: If you think a water or electric bill is too high, ask in writing for the meter to be re-read; a meter test or change requires a $25 deposit.

Our plain-English summary, not the official text or legal advice. The ordinance below is what counts.

A. In the event that a utility customer makes a complaint that his/her water and/or electric billing for any specific period is excessive, the City of Fayette upon receiving a written request from the utility customer will have the meter(s) in question re-read and the service inspected for leaks or mechanical problems. If in the event the utility customer makes a written request to have the meter(s) tested or changed, he/she shall make a minimum deposit of twenty-five dollars ($25.00) in advance of testing to cover the cost of the test or change and the test or change will then be processed.

B. In the event the meter(s) upon testing show a registration in excess of three percent (3%) in favor of the City, the amount deposited will be refunded and the City shall make a credited billing adjustment for the estimated excess not consumed by the utility customer immediately preceding and/or the amount billing.

C. In the event no error is found exceeding three percent (3%) in favor of the City, the deposit will be retained by the City.
