Long before Rocheport was platted, the cliffs and river bottoms here were noted by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark during their 1804 expedition up the Missouri River. The Corps of Discovery camped near this area on June 7, 1804, and Lewis recorded the dramatic limestone bluffs in his journal.
The “Old Rock House” refers to a natural limestone formation near Moniteau Creek that was used by Indigenous peoples and early Euro-American trappers as shelter. The site sits close to where the Katy Trail now winds along the river. Interpretive signage along the trail marks the approximate location of the Corps’ camp, connecting visitors to one of the most consequential journeys in American history.
