Rocheport’s history as a planned settlement begins in 1825 when the town was formally platted. Its name derives from the French roche (rock) and port (harbor), referencing the limestone bluffs that define the landscape and the river landing that gave the town its commercial purpose.
By the 1830s Rocheport had become a significant port town, with steamboats carrying goods and passengers between St. Louis and the expanding frontier. Hemp, tobacco, and grain moved through its warehouses in volume. The original grid of streets — many still intact — reflects the optimistic ambitions of its founders, who expected the town to grow into a major inland city.
