If you drive Business Route 240 or Route 3 east of Glasgow, you’ve crossed two bridges that are showing their age. The Business Route 240 bridge over the CPKC Railroad was built in 1934. The Route 3 bridge over the same rail line went up in 1941. The Missouri Department of Transportation says both structures are in poor condition and have reached the end of their useful lives, and MoDOT is asking for public input before it moves forward on replacing them.
Here’s how to weigh in. MoDOT is holding an open-house public meeting on Thursday, September 3, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., at Armstrong City Hall, 106 Halley Street in Armstrong. There’s no formal presentation — you can drop by, look at project exhibits, and talk with MoDOT staff directly. If you can’t make it in person, the same exhibits are posted online at the project page.
The public comment period runs from August 27 through September 17. You can submit comments through the project webpages, by email to CDCR@modot.mo.gov, or by mail to MoDOT at 1511 Missouri Boulevard, Jefferson City, MO 65109. What this means for your commute: MoDOT expects construction in 2027 or 2028, depending on contractor availability, and each bridge will need to close with a signed detour while it’s rebuilt — one at a time, not both together, though MoDOT hasn’t yet spelled out the detour routes. For anyone who uses these crossings to get to work, school, or the farm on the other side of the tracks, that’s still a couple of years out, but the comment window closing September 17 is your best chance to have a say in how it’s handled before the plans are locked in.
Both bridges sit squarely in Howard County, on routes plenty of us use to get around the rail line east of Glasgow — this is the kind of decision that’s easy to miss until the detour signs go up, so now’s the time to speak up if you have concerns.
