Sunday, August 9 was a good day to be a kid in Boonville. The Boonville Kiwanis Club and Kingdom Krew held their annual Back to School Bash at Lions Park, sending kindergarten-through-fifth-graders home with new backpacks and hundreds of packs of school supplies, according to the Boonville Daily News.
“It’s amazing what the community can do when we all band together,” one organizer told the paper.
It’s become a Cooper County tradition worth watching for every August. Last year’s version of the drive — its 11th — packed 450 bags of supplies and had already given away half of them within the first hour, KOMU reported at the time, with local businesses, individual donors and a city of Boonville local-agency-funding grant covering the cost. Leftover supplies that year went straight to Boonville’s public schools rather than back in storage.
Whatever this year’s exact numbers turn out to be, the idea stays the same: a Sunday afternoon at the park, a line of families, and a stack of supplies that makes the first day of school a little easier on somebody’s budget.
