Heat Sticks Around Through Wednesday. It’s not done with us yet. The National Weather Service’s Extreme Heat Warning for mid-Missouri holds through 8 p.m. Wednesday, with heat index values climbing into the triple digits — as high as 110 on the worst afternoons, per ABC 17 News. Relief arrives with a cold front Wednesday evening, dropping highs back to the mid-80s, with storm chances moving in Thursday through Saturday. Until then: water breaks, shade, and a check-in on any neighbor who doesn’t have good air conditioning.

A New Way to Report an Illegal Gun. Columbia/Boone County Crime Stoppers rolled out an Illegal Criminal Weapon Recovery Program over the weekend, offering a $500 cash reward for an anonymous tip that leads to recovering an illegal weapon or a felony arrest, according to KBIA. Board president John Fields says don’t handle the weapon yourself — just tell them where it is and let police take it from there. Columbia has logged 838 stolen guns since 2022, with about 653 later turning up in a crime, though thefts are down 56% so far this year. Tips: 573-875-8477 or p3tips.com/899.

The Daniel Boone Regional Library’s Bookmobile stops in Rocheport Thursday at 3 p.m. (205 Central Street). Downtown, Locals Night gathers the same evening at 4 p.m. (202 Central Street) — Diane’s long-running weekly meetup for anyone who calls Rocheport home. Thursday at 7 p.m., Joe Devoy plays piano at The Rocheport Winery at Mount Nebo Inn; the Jeff and Noah Collective takes the same stage Friday, also at 7.

The Missouri River gauge at Boonville reads 9.22 feet this morning and falling — well below flood stage. Good conditions for the Katy Trail this week, if you can beat the heat; go early or go late.
Roads & I-70
MoDOT holds a ribbon-cutting today at 10:30 a.m. for the new St. Charles Road bridge over I-70 at mile marker 131 (Columbia’s Lake of the Woods exit) — replacing a 1957 structure that couldn’t clear six lanes of modern truck traffic, per MoDOT. The bridge won’t open to traffic right away, but it’s a milestone in the $405 million Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City project.
Elsewhere on the corridor this week, via MoDOT’s planned work list: the Providence Road bridge (Exit 126) stays closed, all ramps shut, through late October. Westbound ramps at Routes J/O (Exit 117) remain closed through November — detour via U.S. 40, Route 240, and Route BB. In Cooper County, resurfacing on Route 135 between I-70 and Route JJ starts Tuesday, August 12, one lane open behind a pilot car. Exit 98’s ramps close both directions August 14, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., for seal coating. And in Howard County, shoulder work continues on Route 124 between Fayette and U.S. 63.
