The Missouri River isn’t a race course that happens to have other traffic on it — it’s a working river that the MR340 borrows for a few days every summer. Barges, towboats, and other commercial traffic use the same channel racers paddle through, and sharing that water safely is part of what the race has to plan around every year.
Race organizers build guidance around exactly that reality. According to Missouri River 340 (mr340.org), racers are briefed on general river safety as part of preparing for the event, since the Missouri River carries commercial and recreational traffic, changing currents, and submerged hazards that don’t pause for a race. Staying visible, staying predictable, and giving larger vessels a wide berth are basic river-safety habits that matter more, not less, when you’re in a kayak or canoe sharing water with something the size of a barge.
The river itself shapes a lot of that risk. According to Missouri State Parks (mostateparks.com), the Missouri River corridor the Katy Trail follows for much of its length is a working waterway as well as a recreational one, with currents and channel structures that affect how boats of any size move through the water. The Missouri Department of Conservation (mdc.mo.gov) likewise treats the river as a multi-use resource, balancing navigation, wildlife, and recreation along the same channel.
What we don’t have — and want to be upfront about — is the barge-industry side of this story: how towboat operators watch for a few hundred kayaks and canoes strung out over 340 miles of their working channel, what radio or visual coordination happens between commercial traffic and race safety crews, and how often near-misses actually occur.
For now, the plain version holds: it’s a shared, working river, the traffic on it doesn’t stop for a race, and the safest racers out there this week will be the ones who remember that a barge can’t get out of their way — they have to get out of the barge’s way.
