When Boone, Howard, Cooper Results Are Official

Sponsored by Southern Provisions

Election night totals in Boone, Howard, Cooper and Callaway counties are unofficial until each county certifies, between Nov. 6 and Nov. 17.

Here is what happens between the last vote counted after the Nov. 3 general election and the start of the new terms.

Step 1: Your county clerk certifies

State law bars county election authorities from certifying results before noon on the Friday after Election Day, which is Nov. 6 this year (RSMo 115.508). In the days after the election, clerks check the totals and count provisional ballots. The deadline is “not later than the second Tuesday after the election,” which is Tuesday, Nov. 17 (RSMo 115.507). Counties then send the totals for multi-county races, such as the Missouri House and U.S. House seats, to the Secretary of State.

Until a county certifies, the numbers you see are unofficial. A close race can move a little as provisional ballots are counted.

Step 2: The state canvass

The Board of State Canvassers totals the results for statewide and legislative races and announces them “not later than the second Tuesday in December” (RSMo 115.511). In 2026 that is Tuesday, Dec. 8.

When winners take office

The county clerk’s term begins on Jan. 1 after the election (RSMo 51.020). Start dates for other county offices depend on the office, so ask your county clerk if you need a date for a particular seat. The Missouri General Assembly convenes at the Capitol on the first Wednesday after the first Monday in January (Missouri Constitution, Article III, Section 20), which falls on Jan. 6, 2027.
