Volunteers made parking improvements around town over Labor Day weekend. Thanks to all those who helped.

The plan for parking improvements had been in the works for months and the work commenced the week of Labor Day. Volunteers, shovels, rakes, a skid loader, and lots of gravel were in the mix in hopes of making it easier to park and get around. It took two days of work to make this appreciable improvement. The town was able to use Coopers Sales & Welding to deliver the gravel. Their service to our community is appreciated.

Where you will see changes

You will notice the marked improvements in front of the Christian Church on the stretch of 2nd Street between Central and Columbia Street and on the east side of Central Street between 2nd and 3rd Street. Volunteers removed around six inches of dirt and filled this space in with mixed gravel. This mix of gravel compacts over time and will make it easy for people to get in and out of their vehicles in wet weather.

The volunteers got it done

John Zondca, Conrad Yates, Jeff Jira, Phil Gresham, and Roman Clarkson did a lot of watching as Jeff drove the skid loader, but they were all on stand by to shovel and sweep gravel and dirt as needed. They put in approximately 12 hours of work over two days until the job was complete. The final results showed the care and experience local leaders have when getting road projects done. The only thing left is for Mother Nature to give it a good watering so the gravel gets tightly packed and the dust washes off the rock.

Update on RODOT maintenance shed

Rocheport Department of Transportation (RODOT) was able to use the left over gravel to make some grade improvements to a few other places in town. There is now a build up of gravel around the RODOT shed which will give our tractor equipment a place to rest off the ground, along with other implements. Lastly, the crew visited the River Walk and removed a hanging branch and dead tree which posed a danger to walkers.
