ROCHEPORT, Mo — When we decided to establish Rocheport Times as a local news source, we researched the history of the town’s newspapers, discovering there had been several. Now depending on your classification of a newspaper, the number can go anywhere from three to five past newspapers. The Friends of Rocheport, in their publication Friends, issue No. 8, October 21, 2021, noted that there were three previous newspapers in Rocheport:
The Library of Congress has these three newspapers listed as well as two others:
The correct number is yet to be decided. We might need to go to the Missouri Historical Society in Saint Louis or the State Historical Society of Missouri in Columbia to verify.
After going through a series of potential names for our newspaper, we settled on the Rocheport Times, paying homage to the first newspaper in Rocheport, Missouri, the original Rocheport Times established in 1868. We let the name sink in and tested working with it. It did not take long to realize, it was the name for us. The name Rocheport Times has not been used for over 150 years, and we feel like it is time to revive some history with current times.
We hope that the community embraces our decision to revive an old name in history and make it new again. We also hope we will become your new local news source.
