Missouri River Relief is turning 25 this year, and the Columbia-based river-cleanup nonprofit is inviting the public to hear the story behind a quarter-century of pulling trash out of the Missouri River.
The organization’s race director, Steve Schnarr, will give a presentation called “25 Years on the Big Muddy” at 7 p.m. on November 10 at the Riechmann Indoor Pavilion in Stephens Lake Park in Columbia. A social hour precedes the talk at 6 p.m. For anyone who can’t make it in person, the event will be livestreamed on Zoom and YouTube.
The presentation caps a year of anniversary programming for the group, which has spent the past two and a half decades organizing volunteer cleanups on the Missouri River — including right here on our stretch near Cooper’s Landing, where the fourth “Big Muddy Clean Sweep” is scheduled for September 26–29 as part of the group’s 25th-anniversary cleanup series. Missouri River Relief has also been recognized in recent years by the Missouri Environmental Education Association as its Organization of the Year.
Schnarr’s talk is billed as a look back at how a handful of volunteers turned into a river-wide movement — and what a quarter-century on the water has taught the group about the Big Muddy and the people who live along it.
