Foggy again this morning — the National Weather Service had a dense fog advisory over mid-Missouri until 9 a.m., visibility down to a quarter-mile in spots. Otherwise mild for late August, 71 degrees at daybreak. Here’s what matters on our stretch of the river today.

MU is telling students to steer clear of a downtown Columbia block after dark. University of Missouri President Mun Choi and Provost Matthew Martens sent a welcome-week email Monday warning students off Walnut Street between 8th and 10th, after a shooting and a large brawl near Walnut and Ninth over the summer. “Incidents downtown typically occur between midnight and 3 a.m.; make sure you’re home safely before then,” the email read, according to ABC 17.
A broken water main closed West Ash Street near the ARC today. Crews shut the block between Bernadette Drive and Clinkscales Road at 4 a.m. Wednesday for emergency repairs, with the work expected done by afternoon, ABC 17 reports. If you’re headed to the ARC, use the Clinkscales Road entrance; through traffic should detour via West Worley or West Broadway.
Tougher penalties for passing a stopped school bus start Friday. Missouri’s new law bumps a first offense to a $500–$1,000 fine and a 90-day license suspension, effective August 28 — three days after most of our local schools opened for the year. We wrote up the details yesterday.

Roads & I-70
Providence Road’s ramps at I-70 stay closed into fall. Both directions’ ramps at the Providence Road interchange in Columbia remain shut for bridge reconstruction under MoDOT’s Improve I-70: Rocheport to Columbia project, with the detour running through the Range Line Street ramps, KOMU reports. Expect it into October as the third-lane build works its way toward us.
River check: the Missouri River at Boonville is running 8.67 feet and rising, comfortably under flood stage.
