The Shops at Sharp End — the retail incubator on Walnut Street that gave small, mostly Black-owned businesses a storefront in downtown Columbia — is closing down. The grant money that funded it ran out in June, and interim funding from Central Missouri Community Action only carries the program through September, according to KOMU 8 and ABC 17 News.
The storefront opened in 2024 as a partnership between Regional Economic Development Inc., The District and Central Missouri Community Action, built to help entrepreneurs get a foothold downtown while honoring the ground it sits on. Sharp End was Columbia’s Black business district for most of the 20th century — a stretch of Fifth Street that, as the Columbia Missourian has reported, traces back to a butcher shop John Lange Sr. opened around 1870, and grew into a lively corridor of Black-owned restaurants, clubs and shops. Urban renewal ended it: Columbia voters created a redevelopment authority in 1956, and by 1960 the land under Sharp End had been bought up and cleared, eventually replaced by a post office and a parking lot. Most of the businesses that had operated there never reopened anywhere else. A historic marker went up in 2015 to remember what had been lost.
Residents who gave feedback on the incubator raised a couple of recurring concerns, per KOMU: the space was hard to spot from the street, with no clear signage showing that multiple businesses operated inside, and some questioned whether the program had met its goals in the two years it ran.
Now the city is starting an Expression of Interest process to find a new use for the space. The first chance to weigh in is a community meeting on Thursday, August 27, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the REDI Hub, 500 E. Walnut St., Suite 105 — a short walk from the storefront itself, right in downtown Columbia. Neither station’s report lays out the formal proposal process yet, so if you’ve got an idea for what belongs in that space, the meeting is the place to start asking.
It’s one storefront, but it sits on ground that’s already been cleared once before in the name of somebody else’s plan. Whatever the city decides to put there next will say something about what it’s learned since.
