If you were planning to swing by the Rocheport history museum this summer, hold off — it’s closed for renovation. Friends of Rocheport, the nonprofit that runs it, confirms on its own site that the museum at 101 Moniteau Street is “now closed for renovation” and “will reopen next year.” No firm date beyond that, so if you had a specific visit in mind, I’d call ahead before you drive in.
Here’s the part worth knowing: the museum closing doesn’t mean Friends of Rocheport is dark for the season. The Miriam Green Craft Shop, on Central Street, is still open and still selling work by local artists. If you’re downtown and the museum doors are shut, that’s the stop to make instead — it’s a different building, a few blocks over, and it’s business as usual there.
What’s actually being renovated
Friends of Rocheport has been around since 1967, formed to “gather and preserve materials and artifacts related to the history of Rocheport and to exhibit those items to educate the public,” according to the group’s own history. The building at the center of the current renovation is the one they bought and restored early on — described on their site as the oldest building in Rocheport, repurposed as the museum. Over the decades the group has also sponsored repairs to the old Community Hall, helped fund the purchase and partial restoration of a 1914 school building, and put up historical markers at the ice house and the town’s entrances. None of that is small work for an all-volunteer group in a town this size.
It’s worth the context: Rocheport isn’t short on history to protect. The town sits on a Lewis and Clark Expedition site, hosted a Whig Party gathering in the 1840s, ran as a river shipping port, and still has the MKT railroad’s only tunnel running through the bluffs above town. It landed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and Friends of Rocheport marked the town’s bicentennial in 2025. Fixing up the oldest building in a town like that isn’t a quick job — which is presumably part of why “next year” is the best estimate on offer right now.
What Friends of Rocheport has coming up
The renovation isn’t slowing down the rest of the group’s calendar. According to the organization, the next events on the books for 2026 are a Membership Dinner Meeting on August 9, a Mum Sale September 11-12, a Chili, Ham & Beans Dinner on October 17, and the Tree Lighting on November 27. If you’ve been meaning to get involved, a membership dinner is about as low-key an entry point as there is — and Friends of Rocheport says new members and volunteers are welcome, with a form on their website’s About Us page.
For a small town, Friends of Rocheport carries a lot of the load on keeping local history somewhere people can actually walk into. A closed museum for a season is a normal cost of fixing up an old building — it’s not the group going quiet. Worth checking their site before a visit either way, since renovation timelines have a way of moving.
