Romantic Weekend in Rocheport: The Complete Couples Itinerary

Rocheport is a good place to slow down with someone. It’s a town of a couple hundred people tucked into the bluffs above the Missouri River on the Katy Trail — good wine, a couple of galleries, and some of the most characterful lodging in mid-Missouri. Here’s how to spend two unhurried nights.

Friday evening — settle in at Amber House B&B. Check into the Amber House Bed & Breakfast on Third Street, where innkeepers Dawson and Sherri Claridge run four suites — some with jetted tubs, worth asking about when you book. Get unpacked, then head up to the Les Bourgeois A-Frame Winegarden for the evening: award-winning wine, shareable plates, and the Missouri River valley going gold at dusk. Order a glass of their Norton, Missouri’s signature red grape, and stay for the sunset.

Saturday — The Full Rocheport Day

After Amber House’s made-to-order breakfast, rent bikes in town and pedal the flat, crushed-limestone trail east toward Huntsdale — the bluffs are stunning in morning light. Back in town by noon, grab lunch at Meriwether Cafe and Bike Shop at 700 First Street, which is a bike shop too. Breakfast is served all day if that’s more your speed, and lunch runs to burgers, sandwiches, and salads. Spend the afternoon back up at the A-Frame with a flight of the estate whites, watching the river traffic below. Come evening, keep it easy — a bottle and a picnic plate on the bluff beats rushing anywhere. If you booked two nights, this is the night to move over to the White Horse Guest House at 306 Clark Street — a restored Victorian you rent in full, with a hot tub out back and no one else in the house.

Sunday morning — galleries and departure. Spend an hour on Second Street before you check out: Shirahaze Gallery — Yukari Kashihara’s one-of-a-kind porcelain — and the studios around it are worth a slow look. Cap the weekend with a farewell breakfast at Meriwether, then roll out on the trail one last time.

Two nights is enough time to actually settle in here, and if you want more options than the two we’ve mentioned, our lodging listings cover the rest of the town’s rooms, rates, and booking links.
