There’s a reason people keep coming back to Rocheport. This little river town — population around 200, perched above the Missouri River on the edge of the Katy Trail — packs a lot into a few square blocks. Here’s how to spend two days.
Friday Evening: Arrive and Settle In
Roll into town before sunset if you can. Rocheport has a handful of bed and breakfasts along its quiet, tree-lined streets — places with wraparound porches, homemade breakfasts, and hosts who know the town. Check in, drop your bags, and take a slow walk through the historic district as the light hits the bluffs.
Saturday Morning: The Katy Trail and the Tunnel
Wake up early. Head to the Rocheport trailhead at the foot of First Street, around mile marker 178.3, and start pedaling west. Within the first half mile you pass through the railroad tunnel — a 243-foot bore cut through solid limestone, cool and dark even in summer, and the only tunnel on the whole trail. From there the trail winds along the river bluffs through mature hardwoods. It’s flat, crushed limestone, and easy going. Take your time.
Saturday Afternoon: Lunch and Wine
After your ride, clean up and head to Meriwether Cafe on First Street, right by the trailhead. The food is locally sourced, the menu changes with the season, and the coffee is worth the stop on its own. After lunch, drive or bike up to Les Bourgeois Vineyards’ A-Frame on the bluff above town. Order a glass of something from their Missouri wine list, find a chair on the deck, and let the afternoon go. The view over the Missouri River Valley from up there is one of the best in the state.
Saturday Evening: Sunset on the Bluffs
As the sun drops, make your way back to the Katy Trail at the edge of town, where the limestone bluffs and the river catch the last of the light. It’s quiet and it’s historic, and on a clear evening it’s worth lingering over.
Sunday Morning: Galleries and the General Store
Sunday in Rocheport is for wandering. The town has a small but real arts community — pop into the galleries and antique shops in the village and see what’s showing. Before you leave, stop at the Rocheport General Store for coffee, local goods, and one more look around town.
The drive home will feel quieter than usual. That’s normal.
