Wassail Walk: Rocheport’s Most Beloved Holiday Tradition

·

What began as a small-town holiday gathering has grown into one of mid-Missouri’s most beloved late-November rituals.

If you’ve never heard of wassail, you’re in for a treat. It’s a traditional warm spiced beverage — think apple cider steeped with cinnamon, cloves, and citrus — that dates back centuries to English holiday celebrations. On Wassail Walk night, participating Rocheport merchants serve it up at stops throughout town, and the whole thing unfolds as a self-guided crawl along Rocheport’s historic brick streets. You move at your own pace, stepping into warm storefronts, tasting the wassail each spot has prepared, and collecting a little holiday cheer along the way.

The event has been listed on both Visit Missouri’s official state tourism calendar and KOMU 8’s community events calendar, which tells you something: this isn’t just a locals-only secret anymore. People make the drive from Columbia, Jefferson City, and beyond specifically for this evening. And it’s easy to see why. Rocheport’s downtown is already one of the most charming streetscapes in Missouri — a row of 19th-century buildings tucked between the Katy Trail and the Missouri River bluffs — and on Wassail Walk night, with holiday lights glowing and storefronts lit up, downtown Rocheport is at its best.

Santa Claus makes an appearance, which means families with kids have a reason to come early. A community Christmas tree lighting ceremony anchors the evening. In past years, a caroling competition has featured singing groups out in the street. And if you’ve been following RAMA’s annual plein air painting event, this is the night the raffle winner gets announced.

The Rocheport Area Merchants Association keeps admission free, which feels right for an event built around community — a simple winter evening turned into something worth remembering.

Wassail Walk is held on Black Friday — the day after Thanksgiving — each year, from noon to 5 PM. Check the events page for this year’s date and details, and mark your calendar early — Wassail Walk night fills up fast.
